چکیده

The saturation assumption is widely used in computational science and engineering, usually without any rigorous theoretical justification and even despite of counterexamples for some coarse meshes known in the mathematical literature. On the other hand, there is overwhelming numerical evidence at least in an asymptotic regime for the validity of the saturation. In the generalized form, the assumption states, for any 0 < ε ≤ 1, that |||u− Û ||| ≤ (1− ε/C)|||u− U ||| + ε osc(f,N ) (SA) for the exact solution u and the first-order conforming finite element solution U (resp. Û) of the Poisson model problem with respect to a regular triangulation T (resp. T̂ ) and its uniform refinement T̂ within the class T of admissible triangulations. The point is that the patchoriented oscillations osc(f,N ) vanish for constant right-hand sides f ≡ 1 and may be of higher order for smooth f , while the strong reduction factor (1− ε/C) < 1 involves some universal constant C which exclusively depends on the set of admissible triangulations and so on the initial triangulation only. This paper proves the inequality (SA) for the energy norms of the errors for any admissible triangulation T in T up to computable pathological situations characterized by failing the weak saturation test (WS). This computational test (WS) for some triangulation T states that the solutions U and Û do not coincide for the constant right-hand side f ≡ 1. The set of possible counterexamples is characterized as T with no interior node or exactly one interior node which is the vertex of all triangles and T̂ is a particular uniform bisec3 refinement. In particular, the strong saturation assumption holds for all triangulations with more than one degree of freedom. The weak saturation test (WS) is only required for zero or one degree of freedom and gives a definite outcome with O(1) operations. The only counterexamples known so far are regular n-polygons. The paper also discusses a generalization to linear elliptic second-order PDEs with small convection to prove that saturation is somehow generic and fails only in very particular situations characterised by (WS). 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification. 65N15, 65N30.

Maintaining Consistency in Hierarchical Reasoning

We explore techniques for maintaining consistency in reasoning when employing dynamic hierarchical task decompositions. In particular, we consider the difficulty of maintaining consistency when an agent nonmonotonically modifies an assumption in one level of the task hierarchy and that assumption depends upon potentially dynamic assertions higher in the hierarchy. The hypothesis of our work is ...

Element of justification in contemporary epistemology

The definition of propositional knowledge has been said to be: "knowledge is belief in justified truth" and belief, truth, and justified are necessary and adequate conditions in the actualization of knowledge.  Many faults have been directed towards this three elemental definition, which some of them have been derived from the element of justification. This article reviews some of the most im...

An Improvement in Cation Exchange Capacity Estimation and Water Saturation Calculation in Shaly Layers for One of Iranian Oil Fields

Water saturation and cation exchange capacity are the most significant parameters used to calculate a hydrocarbon zone potential. In clean formations, by applying the famous Archie model, which assumes that in the formation the only electric conductor is the formation water, the water saturation can be calculated. Additionally, in shaly sand formations this assumption may not be true as the ion...

TREND-CYCLE ESTIMATION USING FUZZY TRANSFORM OF HIGHER DEGREE

In this paper, we provide theoretical justification for the application of higher degree fuzzy transform in time series analysis. Under the assumption that a time series can be additively decomposed into a trend-cycle, a seasonal component and a random noise, we demonstrate that the higher degree fuzzy transform technique can be used for the estimation of the trend-cycle, which is one of the ba...

Justification by an Infinity of Conditional Probabilities

Today it is generally assumed that epistemic justification comes in degrees. The consequences, however, have not been adequately appreciated. In this paper we show that the assumption invalidates some venerable attacks on infinitism: once we accept that epistemic justification is gradual, an infinitist stance makes perfect sense. It is only without the assumption that infinitism runs into diffi...
